{Portables, modems, and printers connect at Artisoft's new LAN Central
{Station}
Networking takes another step forward in flexibility with Artisoft's Central
Station, the new multi-port add-on allowing portables to connect and
separate without disrupting the network. At Spring COMDEX, Central
Station took the Best of Spring Award from Byte Magazine and the
Interface Group for best connectivity product of the show. Created to
support the burgeoning use of portable computers, Central Station also
allows peripherals such as printers, modems, or CD-ROM drives to plug
into and disconnect from its one parallel and two serial ports without a
need to reconfigure the network. Other people on the network can also
use the peripherals, even when the portable is gone. It will allow a laptop
to be connected to the system simultaneously with remote or local
printing. Central Station will operate on most popular network systems,
including LANtastic or Novell with either twisted-pair or thin-coaxial cable.
Jack Schoof, Artisoft's president and CEO, has taken a close personal
interest in developing Central Station. He called it "the ideal slotless
solution for laptop, notebook and printer connections to a network. It
combines and exceeds the benefits of using several existing products at
a fraction of the price." Central Station will be available from Artisoft
dealers in the fall for $595.
